McEniff does U-turn

July 27, 2004
Brian McEniff is to continue as Donegal football manager despite indicating to the players that he would be stepping down following their All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Fermanagh at the weekend. At a county board meeting on Monday night, July 26, McEniff requested permission to see out the second half of his two-year term and chairman Charlie O'Donnell agreed to this. The Bundoran hotelier said that he had been contacted by several players and other individuals since Saturday's defeat asking him to stay on for another 12 months. It is not the first time McEniff has done a U-turn with regard to the job he has held on six different occasions. Donegal's premature departure from the All-Ireland series came as a surprise, especially after they beat All-Ireland champions Tyrone in the Ulster semi-final. "I said after the Tyrone match that we had just played a team that were not going well, neither mentally or physically. Too much was read into the victory by the public and the players," he said. "Then we were well below par against Armagh. The nature of the defeat and the fallout from that game obviously left their scares, but we kicked 19 wides against Fermanagh. That was horrific shooting. It's hard to say why it happened as we do have three of the best strikers in the game."
